In addition to three proven simulation models, the CBFS program is also compiling a comprehensive dataset that combines tens of thousands of historical measurements extending back over decades. Accurate Earth system prediction tools need both a sophisticated model and a large database of climate information. The database not only makes possible statistical predictions - the probability that certain conditions will produce certain outcomes, based on prior correlations among variables - but also provides a standard against which forecast models can be tested.
